You read far too much into the remark. There are a lot of live recordings of rock where there is distortion. Not always easy to discern the source of distortion (recording or playback).

The point was that with some rock recordings, one may expect a certain low level of distortion characteristics, especially if it is a live recording. It's a consequence of the genre, not the playback system.

Of course a good audio system should not distort. Most people would understand the remark in its intended consequence.
