I love this one, too. Think it's Baxter on a Telecaster (through Fender Deluxe Reverb). Sure sounds good on my Tele (through my Super Reverb).

Hi John,
I did some research and found that Becker played the solos on the following tracks:
Black Friday - Katy Lied
Bad Sneakers - Katy Lied
The Fez - The Royal Scam
Home at Last - Aja
I Got the News - Aja
Josie - Aja
Gaucho - Gaucho
It looks like I was also wrong about not having other players on the Gaucho album. According to Wikipedia:
Time Out of Mind - Mark Knopfler
My Rival - Steve Khan
Third World Man - Larry Carlton
Apparently the entire first side of the album (3 songs) didn't have any guitar solos.
Thanks for the correction!
Charles Hansen
From Wikipedia: "Fagen and Becker hired Mark Knopfler to play the guitar solo on "Time Out of Mind" after hearing him play on Dire Straits' hit single "Sultans of Swing". Several hours of Knopfler's playing were recorded at the session, but his contributions as heard on the record are limited to a matter of seconds."
When I listen to the song, the intro licks have Knopfler's styling and, maybe, again as the songs fades out. But otherwise seems like a huge waste of what could have been. Along those lines, I vaguely recall reading an account (many years ago) that Fagen and Becker had brought Rick Derringer into the studio and spent many hours, even days, recording his playing for a song on Aja . . . they ended up using none of it!
But Larry's solo in Third World Man is one of the finest to grace any Dan album.
Live long and prosper.
HI John,
When I listened to it briefly just now with my 1" laptop speakers, it sounded like it was double-tracked. I stumbled across a guy who does a darned good job of playing both parts at once by using his bare fingers:
Hello Charles,
That guy did better than I could. Thanks for that. I don't think the original is over-dubbed; Larry is just that good.
I saw the Dan on the '93 tour, their first after a long hiatus. The stunt guitarist was the excellent Drew Zingg. He was his own man in creating fresh solos, not imitating the records. With one exception, TWM which he played note for note.
and didn't realize (or had forgotten) that Knopfler played on Gaucho. I'll have to listen with a keen ear.
BTW, where did you find the credits? SD was infamous for failing to credit the players on each song.
I went back and listened to all of the guitar solos Becker played, and IMO "Black Friday" was probably the best of them all. But I also found a few other *amazing* tributes:
Walter's daughter Sayan's tribute:

I trusted Wikipedia - not always a good idea, but in this case, probably not too far off. If you go to the main Steely Dan page, there is a list of albums. Click on each album and there are many details of who played what. I'd guess that it is a "crowd-sourced" compilation of interviews from various musician's magazines - eg, an interview with Chuck Rainey and so forth. Also on YouTube are some clips that look like the came from the VH-1 (MTV for adults) show "Classic Albums: The Making of.." (or something like that).
Cheers,
Charles Hansen
As far as I know there weren't many (any?) until "Gaucho". Then all of the solos were by Walter Becker. I just can't imagine some of their best songs with some random guitar player doing the solos.
