I vaguely remember encountering this problem with my Sony UBP-X800 Blu Ray player. Playback of SACDs in this device resulted in audio only through my Sony TV. I had a small audio system set up which was connected to the Blu Ray player using the coax connection.
As I recall the problem was copy protection. DSD output from coax or HDMI could only be heard through a separate audio system if an AVR was used which contained the correct decoding chip.
If the Blu Ray player had an analog out I suspect that would have worked.
Of course, this may have nothing to do with your situation but that's what I remember when I had this issue.

If I'm reading your post correctly, he won't be able to play SCAD through HDMI or Coax. Shouldn't he be able to play through the analog RCA outs, if he has them?
Dave
Yes. Analog outputs should work.
