Hi Fred,
......"It sounds very much to me that you're going off in the same misdirection as far as the " everything but the Kitchen sink " excessive modding approach and very likely to mod your way to
diminishing the TD 125's wonderful inherent engaging and musical
nature........"
I agree that this is a great table and at this moment the only thing I am doing tweaking it is a rigid baseplate to fix the cones (still I don't know id plywood or MDF will work better, I believe is similar to let the TT rest on an MDF shelf, with the cone downside up). The rest of them I will call it restoration to the original standard.
Regarding armboard, I believe, Thorens original was made on baltic birch plywood and on MDF, so I will do some on MDF (can't get here baltic birch plywood, btw.), but as far as I know, there are two general vision on this, add a little damping to the arm to decouple some remaining vibrations (MDF) with its inherit caracteristis sound or using some hardwood to try to get close to the aluminium rigidity, well, a little less, to trust all decoupling work to springs. I will like to try both with the Rega. I don't like abstract but experimenting.
Regarding caps and other elechtronic parts, I believe that 37 years old caps, maybe need some replacement, don't you believe? Maybe are a little dry.
Regarding doing too much mods at the same time, well I have some little experience with kits and the golden rule is the same that you stated: first the standard sound, then a little mod, some large heraing, etc. I agree.
Regarding tonearm, well, here maybe you where agree that Rega arms has a low cost cable and connectors and a good cable is a thing that is noticiable, so in some point I will rewire it, no doubt at all.
Thanks for the Linn spring replacement, but I believe that this ones still are in good shape, maybe later I will get a set just to hear the differences. I agre also that this is a matter of joy, the joy of listening and fine tuning till get closer to your dreams! Like an instrument.
Well, thanks again for your wise advises. Please let me know if you have repalce some electrolitics.
Best for you,
Beto
