Hi Fred,
thanks for your huge and plenty of advises post.
Well, as I can see, you use the MDF shelf as a vibration isolator and your cones get the correct levelling, also help decouplig, I guess. Also I am considering an on wall structure to suport the table, maybe with an MDF cage filled with sand as a shelf, not sure at this moment.
For sure there are lots of aproaches to the same problem and I agree that this model are very well engenieering and with no tweaks offer a good sound.
All my choices are based on products reviews and I have read some very good from RDC cones (too expensives) Black Diamond and Poly Crystal ISO3 the least expensive of the group.
On TAD I have seen all info about our regarded turntables, including suspension tunning and I have post on the Vinyl Engine too.
MY first aproach to get an extra baseplate containing 3 cones was Rolf Kelch proyect on an hybrid 125/126 Thorens using RDC baseplate and cones. Well he go further on this road, by the way, building a new plinth filled with steel balls.
Due to my profession I have an idea about structure and I can imagine how isolator works, but the science mother are experience, so I will have to hear a couple of solutions first. Thats a hard thing when budget is tight, but I believe is necessary.
I have my first round with tuning suspension with my old arm, prior to desmanteld the table to check for any damaged piece of oxide, etc.
I have check voltages and are impressive exact,I have clean with isopropyl alcohol the slider bridge contact and this solve some intermitent run on 16 rpm speed (who needs 16 rpm?) then I have pulish the bearing and spindle with an ex Thorens employee kit for this table. The kit also includes oil for bearing and motor and a tiny plate to put on the bearing bottom to correct any deterioration (mine has a point mark produced by the spindle work over the years).
Also I have get the missing strobe disc and an mint slider knob to replace one that has a huge mark. A new cork mat are on travel and I am preparing one MDF and one very hard brazilean wood armboards to get a colse hearing on damping or on rigid aproach to mount the arm.
Finally I have get a Rega RB300 with a VTA adjuster that I'm planning to rewire in a month or two with Audio Consulting silver wire in direct run from headshell clips to RCA plugs and later I'm planning to get another counterweight from Michell or one of bronze that sell audiotweaks from Germany on e-bay.
Well, one of the most important thing is to get a good cartridge (for the money). Here, for now I can just get an MM one because I own an MM phono stage, Audio Note kits (to match my Audio Note kit 1), so maybe will be some Goldring or Grado. Now I has a less than one year old Shure M97xE.
I will post my experience when I have all things together and finally I can let this baby sing.
Best for you,
Beto
P.S. I own an MKI, I believe from 1969. BTW, do you replace old capacitors?
