An experiment where ultrasonic vs. traditional/vacuum cleaning methods are checked out under a microscope sounds like the way to go!
I would be very interested in the results of an experiment performed by your students in microspcopy class, let us know the results if you do it!

I was able to access the Chinese researcher's website, but since I can't speak or read the language, there was not much to go on. However, I wonder if the record he used was one that he heaped crud on but not played and cleaned, or if this was a typical used album that was played dirty and has particles and stuff ground in by the stylus! This is an important distinction, as an album that is merely dirty and not played in that condition probably does not represent the challenge to clean that a record played under typical non audiophile conditions, not cleaned and with a dirty stylus. A record with crud ground in would represent a more real world example! If you are going to perform an experiment, I would figure such a record (or records) would make the results more relevant to what a collector is likely to find.
