Metallographers use sonicators for cleaning off grinding grit and ground material when preparing samples. The grit usually varies from a couple microns to several hundred. The point of putting samples through the ultrasonic is to 'vibrate' the particles off for the next round of grinding with finer grit (since if you have any particles of the previous larger size, you don't get finer polishing). When it comes to dust on vinyl, I'd expect it to do the same thing. While scrubbing and washing can remove a lot of particles, I think there are always going to be a large number left since a lot of the time, you're simply moving particles from one point to another. Furthermore, vacuuming only works if you can displace particles with air. I'd expect that surface tension due to the low angle a particle makes with a record surface, not to mention stubborn embedded particles, would make vacuuming less useful. Hence, I would expect to get more of them by rattling them off. Not sure tho - but this Chinese guy's experiments seem to support this. (Idea: a project for some of my undergrads to do for microscopy class)
For 5 extra credit points:
Use statistical mechanics arguments to estimate the equilibrium percentage of particles left in a length of an LP groove after sonication of time t. Make reasonable assumptions for barrier energy for moving a particle over a typical high-frequency groove modulations and for the dimensions and shape of the record groove.
For 750 bucks, I still think it'd probably beat the high-end record vacuums out there, as long as you air-dry in a relatively dust-free environment. And the best thing is that it simply requires little to no manpower. Use that dirty AC mains line for something useful :).
