"Dad's childhood chemistry set from the 30s" With some pretty nasty chamicals, I bet! My 1960s Gilbert(?)* sets ...

...had some nasty stuff in them, also. Back then I was very interested in chemistry and went through almost ALL of the experiments in the first set the very first day that I got it!

The second set took somewhat longer as I learned to space out the experiments so as to enjoy the set for a much longer time.

Also, as I lived in Baltimore, MD, the location of a chemical supply house (The Will Corporation) that would sell to walk-ins, I was able to acquire some real chemical glassware over time; and the full hard-bound with glossy-paper pages catalog book of around 1000 pages. I wish that I still had that, it was a very nice sample of the technical printers' art. :>(

*Think A. C. Gilbert (American Flyer trains) here.

Later Gator,
Dave
