The Vxmr is legendary and if the "suspension is shot" that means in the worst case either it's hardened or it has collapsed
Since it sounds good to you as is, make sure once again!! that the set-up of the cartridge and the tone-arm is 100%.
This means making sure the tone-arm is close to 100% friction free and the cartridge VTF is tracking at the specified Spec recommended. Also make absolutely sure the anti-skate is set correctly.
When everything looks 100% and you've confirmed it, play the highest modulated known good record you possess and see if it mis-tracks whatsoever.
If it does mis-track, then report back here. If it does not then you will have your answer. Good luck!
