Home Vinyl Asylum

Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

The only problem I had with the AR XA was with a Grado Black.

I couldn't get the overhang set, the slot in the arm for overhang adjustment isn't long enough hit the correct spot on the AR overhang tool.
Also, one of the Micro Acoustics cartridges wouldn't physically fit in the XA's head shell. One caveat here is that I don't have any original XA head shells, was using aftermarket head shells from Best Audio.
Other than that, I used a Denon DL110, Nagoaka MP 150, couple of different ATs, all worked just fine.
AT makes a good mono cartridge (the VM610 Mono--I've got one), and so does Grado.
The best cart I had in my XA (it's out of service right now because the motor is noisy) was the AT VM540ML. If you bought the 540 and the 610 Mono, you could swap out cartridges without having to change overhang or VTF.

The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.
