And although I haven't heard the VM530EN, I have used other AT carts with elliptical (and conical) styli, and they still tracked very well, had the same sonic signature, etc.
For the record, I'm a huge fan of the 540. I think it's the best cartridge for the money available, and I have compared it, in my system, to several much more expensive cartridges.
But, I also use AT's mono cartridge and an AT VM95C. The mono cart sounds like the 540 in mono. The 95C was well worth the $40 it cost me from Amazon.
I'd say, if you're thinking about popping for the 530EN, do it. You'll probably love the sound, and if you're looking for a little bit more detail later on you can always pick up the 540 stylus.
