An easy way to test your theory (that painting the label side of the CD black improves the sound) is to use three or four squares of regular black vinyl tape stuck to the label side of the CD in symmetrical arrangement. This in itself, if the theory of preventing reflected light from getting back to the photodetector is correct, should result in a noticable improvement to sound. Hint: you will have best chance for success in this matter if your transport spindle is very level. I.e., measuring the level of the chassis of the transport/player may not be a valid indication that the transport spindle itself is level.
