May I suggest you take an hour or so, and read these articles. They will answer many of your questions, even the ones you didn't explicitly ask. Very well written, technically astute, and from someone with no commercial axe to grind.THD Spectra and the Sound of Electronics
A Quick History of THD
A Tiny History of High FidelityIf you like them, there are a number of other articles on the site that will explain more.
My personal opinion on this subject is; if like me you listen to the music to have it touch you, I mean really get in and grip your heart, then ignore what everyone else says and thinks, and how things measure or look, and choose what ever gear helps you get to that place. And when you find it, you will know.
For most of us here, tubes are the conduit. There are some pretty compelling technical reasons why that should be, and they're more subtle than a simple THD reading, but I'll let you decide what works best for you.
Listen with your heart.
