First, reviewers in audio rags hype mainstream, primarily SS or big name, mass produced tube gear. DIY and kit SETs distributed by the manufacturer, especially if that manufacturer does not buy ad space are not a priority for reviews that are really more advertisements than insightful evaluation-- when was the last time you saw a "The new Audio Research xp5000 is AWFUL! avoid it!?" Secondly, triode amps do produce second order harmonics WHEN THEY DISTORT; to say they have a static 2nd-order component omnipresent is plain wrong. Finally, although Tom has a point that tubes present a hobby/zen/hands-on quality, they also are (generally) more expensive, often frustrating when faced with a problem difficult to diagnose, and sourcing quality tubes is often an expensive learning process. Tube audiophiles don't use tubes to be cool, different, mysterious, sophisticated etc; it's all about the sound!!! If I could waltz into Conglomo Stereo and get a rack system for $1000 that satisfied my ears, I would drop tubes in a New York Minute. Mainstream media is not the place to search for accuracy re: tube audio. Chris
