I don't hear differences between the various types of diodes. And although I can measure the recovery time, the effects of that - if any - don't show up in any meaningful way that I can see when they're actually in the PS. All this talk about the sonic consequences of HF energy generated by switching seems to make sense, but I can't see it even on the most sensitive setting of my scope (at the output of the supply). As for the drop, I have no small difficulty with the suggestion that two diodes that both exhibit an extremely low forward impedance will create sonic differences due to one dropping 0.6V and the other 0.2V. Line voltage can easily change 10 to 20 times that difference in the course of a day.
As for the 5AR4, I stopped comparing them years ago. In fact, I no longer have any gear that uses them. My small amps use tubes like the 6X4/6X5, and larger amps all have SS rectification (mostly doublers).
Bear in mind 99% of my experience is hi-fi, not musical instrument amps. Rectification and PS filtering are areas where the two are considerably different.
