To reiterate, if you look at the Radiomuseum site, there is a very sudden uptick in US-made amp designs using the GZ34 in 1959, including many HiFi amps, even though the tube type had been around since 1951.
I guess the obvious answer is that Mullard started producing GZ34s in 1958. This is the kind of historical specificity I was hoping to find out, but maybe no one knows any more than I do about it.
I mean, if I were an amp builder and had to choose between a 5U4 that I could get from RCA, Sylvania, or GE and a GZ34 I could only get from one factory in Holland, I might stick with the 5U4 to reduce the risk of supply chain problems.
