Hard to see why lowering gain a bit thickened the sound. 'Course its not an EAR, but I've used NOS Mullard 4004's in the phono stage of my CJ pv10 a number of times and they certainly didn't sound thin. If anything, they sound rich. Some people - like Joe of Joe's Tube Lore FAQ - think 5751's sound clearer than 12ax7's, but I don't remember anybody saying they sound "thicker".
