Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

ear 864 tube rolling

For the past couple of years ive very happily used a mitch singerman- modified ear 864 preamplifier to feed my Mac 275 VI. Tubes in the phono section were all NOS mullard 4004s. Ive always had a sense that LPs seemed just a bit thin compared with my other sources (mr-7 tuner and Alexis masterlink CD). So I did some research here and elsewhere on tube rolling. I replaced the rearmost tube in the phonograph section with a JAN 5751; thinness gone and some additional inner detail at the rear of the soundstage.

Hard to believe something so seemingly minor could be so significant.

Anybody have any other advice for tweeks?
