He sums my point up rather nicely. Actually, I kind of like one his string pieces, but he made his reputation with the "silence" shtick and by stuffing things into pianos. Thank you for that, I hadn't thought of Cage in a while.As for performances, you've got it just about upside down. The popular Romantics make up a small portion of most orchestra schedules, at least here in So Cal. For every "long hair" work performed there are three or four of Bartok, Debussy, Hindemith, Barber, R. Strauss, etc. Its actually much harder to hear a war horse than you may realize. But that wasn't part of my argument anyway.
