I don't argue your points at all. I responded to EB's post comparing Dylan and Schubert. Please don't think I give the 19th Century composers any god-like qualities. All composers and song writers have their stinkers. The point I tried to make is that Dylan's talent lies in his verse, particularly social commentary verse, and not music composition or performance, yet thats what we attribute as his talent.I'm certain that pop music has many exceptionally gifted musicians who could be modern classical greats. But they never will be, because our pop culture has cut the top off the ladder; a 3-minute tune becomes the masterpiece. Thus the excellent, the mediocre, and the exploiters are all crowded together on the bottom few rungs.
