Number one, like you said, image is too much the issue, and that's basically what's being sold today; the image and the peppy beat. Not that this was never the case. The 70s and 80s for instance had plenty of crappy music to go around. Here's the difference: I think we've been so spoiled by such, dare I say, legendary acts (which I'll leave to your opinion), over the years that anything that comes out now pales in comparison. Frankly, I think that's unfair.
Nonetheless, it is difficult to find genuinely good music out there that isn't either independent or local. I figure the best way to get to it is simply to visit the local night clubs. I've never been to one, so I am completely unfounded w/ this idea.
Finally, I"ll say that the primary reason why MTV's music scene is so devoid of life is basically because they are resting on their laurels. They used to take risks when they were a smaller company, but now that they are a huge conglomerate, the risks are much greater and so they must go with the "sure thing," meaning of course, Least Common Denominator music. I don't even watch MTV, but I do check in from time to time, and this is the impression that I get.
I wish I could make music to change the landscape, but I just don't have the talent, and I don't even know how to play a piano. Damn...
