It's the adagio (2nd movement) where Solti simply outdoes everyone else I've heard. Truly poetic.In the first movement, he allows the trumpets (not trombones) to play more loudly than customary in the exposition; specifically, in the 1st theme group, in passages where they would be playing mid-ground harmony supporting lines. This may strike some as aggressive, but I like brass.
In the balance of the symphony, there aren't any more instances of this kind.
The Szell is OK. I'm not all that crazy about it. The edition he uses is actually the final 1888/89 (in which Schalk had a hand). This is the shortest, most severely cut edition of the work. It's OK, but I prefers the optimum 1877 Nowak edition, which feature the considerable bonus of the impressive schrzo coda (not present in any of the other versions/editions).
I don't want to flame you, but I consider the first Haitink to be horrible, and the Bohm to be among the worse performances of anything.
