Interesting choice. Even though I own the Solti recording, and it's one of Solti's better Bruckner performances, there are others I would pick over it.
First and formost IMO is the Szell/Cleveland from the mid '60s. Szell brings exactly the right blend of excitement and architectural control and balance to the piece (the 1877 version, I believe). The orchestral playing, of course, is unsurpassed. I'm surprised nobody else here has mentioned it.
Others that I enjoy are the (first) Haitink on Philips, and Bohm and the VPO on London.
The thing that turns me off somewhat about the Solti/CSO is the rather overblown nature of much of the brass playing, especially the trombones. It's as if they were trying to "prove a point", and Bruckner doesn't need that. Bruckner's brass writing is full of beauty and power and is capable of succeeding on its own, without any additional "help."
