Indeed, that's the general impression of Solti, but it's incorrect, as most generilizations are. I've heard enough of his recordings to know.Still, he really outdoes himself in this performance. Even giving Solti the benefit of a doubt, one is still surprised at the extreme sensitivity, the depth of feeling in the adagio (quasi andante).
I don't what it is about Bruckner or Mahler that should incite the masses. Maybe it's all of the loud brass.
