I wonder if Furtwangler felt that his beethoven was better than the previous generation of conductors/symphonys?Each generation has a different aspect that it brings to the music, if you prefer an older generation, that is fine, but is not a very interesting criticism of the current one...
more interesting to see what people are doing these days and why, then complain about how they are not doing the old things anymore
in other words, i don't agree that older is better, it is perhaps more easily accesible, easier to categorize, and of course profits from the censor of time which has thrown out 95% of the crap listened too in the 'golden' years, leaving the diamonds.
