with what kurt does. scatting is exceedingly difficult do right and kurt exceeds most others who think theyre scatting well. he never loses it. his voice is his instrument and he musters the confidence and skill to use it properly as such without fear. thats what it takes to perform that way.
ive always looked at mark murphy as an academic singer (when hes not scatting) as well as kurts.the words are clearly annunciated and sustained much as a pianist uses the sustain pedal.
kurts and marks style is not for everyones tastes. its vocal bebop and is practiced by others such as bob dorough and jon hendricks.
its ok not to like a style or genre (i consider this as a sub genre to jazz). these guys dont sing for everybody. they are musical intellectuals and as such have a narrow following.
i wouldnt put anybody down if they dont 'dig it' just as i dont expect to be put down for liking Tomita doing 'pictures at an exhibition'. some just dont like tomita and thats ok for them; im comfortable adoring his work.
kurt has nothing construed going, he has extended and extrapolated the kerouac groove much as mark murphy has, just a little further.
as for david lee roth, van halen just isnt the same without him. he amplified and exemplified what they were doing. since then, they have diverged.
sinatra was getting better nearly al the way to the end. its sad that everyone was just WAITING for his voice to fail just as they did with elvis. too bad elvis took them seriously! franks voice had more and more character as it aged like wine. if you want perfect, buy some diana krall, but ill not buy any more of THAT until she breaks into her own real style.
kurts delivery is intelligent (actually one of the adjectives i find myself thinking and stating about his work). the musicians keep up and many times need to see where he's been to know where to go. this happens with many great musicians such as miles, Parker, and coltrane.
check out jon hendricks and see fi you dont hear a strong relationship his style and uhhhhhh-'read ahead buffering'.
its ALL good, just not for everyone.
