SE:I'm glad to see your post, because now I know I am not alone in not really enjoying (change that to "really not enjoying") Kurt Elling's performances. I have his "Flirting with Twilight" CD, and I could not force myself to listen through it. I think I know what you mean by "not singing in real-time" and "read-ahead buffer." The words "emotionally detached" and "over-manipulated" came to my mind.
Of course, to those who truly enjoy his "singing," here is the common disclaimer: Just my humble opinion, YMMV, WTFDIK, etc., and please don't waste your time lecturing me.
