...among musicians here in Chicago, much the way James Carter was in Detroit when he was younger. I think they're both great, but many would characterize Elling as posturing and BS. I think he's sincere, though he sure like to push the limits live and on record.James was (and still is) often accused of playing unmusically, of "empty virtuosity". Many players on the Detroit scene (mostly older guys) really loathed him. Those who liked him generally LOVED his playing. Very little middle ground there.
I think this kind of intense polarization and disagreement among people who know what they're talking about is usually a sign that the subject of the disagreement is on to something, and may be recognized as a giant in the future. It's happened before, over and over.
