I don't know if it is spiritual, but technical perfection (in terms of note-perfect playing) can be really uninspiring at times. And playing that is not note-perfect can be a wonderful musical experience, especially in live performance. Every wunderkind feels obligated to play Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto -- some with breathtaking technical proficiency. And yet, among the hundreds of recordings, Horowitz is still up there among the most satisfying ever, despite missed notes and little "edits" in performance.
That said, sometimes performances that are not note-perfect are just due to sloppiness or inability. Cherkassky comes to mind.
Valentina Lisitsa is a beautiful young woman, and I admire her tenacity and commitment to her music. I wasn't crazy about her Rachmaninoff. I haven't heard her Chopin. Do you recommend it?
