You might consider starting with Beethoven. While Haydn and Mozart wrote some fine music, Ludwig Van is considered to have raised the string quartet to a higher art. There are 15 quartets, grouped into three parts: "early", "middle", and "late". You might look for a disc of early and/or middle to start with. Which particular ones doesn't make a lot of difference. The quality of artistry exhibited by string quartet players is astonishing. A discussion of what recording to get will bring out a lot of passionate opinions, but you can buy any disc by any group and hear at least a satisfactory performance. New recordings on Naxos or older analog recordings issued at mid-price by labels like London or Phillips would be good buys. Once hooked, you will keep going and acquire all of them in alternate versions. And then, you will branch out and maybe discover the astonishing set, also of 15, in the century past by Shostakovich.
