I am personal friends with several members of the Philadelphia orchestra, one of whom has played in Philly after being hired by Ormandy.
One overlooked attribute which he feels contributed significantly to the the Philly Sound was their being based in the Academy of Music. Apparently it is a very dead hall, and in order to sound good, the players have to really play with significant precision and intonation, maybe not so much more as other orchestras, but with a continual sense of awareness.
IIRC, a few years back, they terminated a concertmaster who wouldn't always follow his own markings for bowing. While the string members always follow the concertmaster anyway ( bow up or down), it irritated the ensemble when that player wouldn't follow his own score markings.....
