"Ormandy 'hand picked' Muti as his successor."
If that's the case, it may have been one of the best things Ormandy had ever done. Unlike the other Big Five bands, I thought Philly sustained its level of playing up to today, and I say Muti was largely responsible for that.
I never was enthralled with Ormandy as an interpreter....... He sustained Philly's excellence, but aside from Rachmaninoff, he never really impressed me. I also never liked his doctoring of scores. (Szell was guilty of this too.)
But Muti, on the other hand, was maybe my favorite Big Five music director (aside from Charles Dutoit) past the Szell/Reiner/Ormandy era.
