about classical music is that it is a rare field where at least at the very highest level, merit prevails over national, racial or ethnic bias. Anthony McGill, the principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, is African-American. Liang Wang, principal oboist of the NY Philharmonic, is Chinese. Riccardo Morales, the new principal clarinetist of the NY Philharmonic, is Puerto Rican. Denis Bouriakov, principal flutist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, is Russian.
The real point is, all of these guys are almost inhumanly phenomenal players. To the point where you almost want to check behind them to see if there are wires coming out. Plenty of great women in today's major orchestras, too, such as Sheryl Staples, Associate Principal Concertmaster of the NY Philharmonic.
Discrimination still exists on the road up, I'm sure. But the cream does rise to the top.
