I own a lot of those you folks are recommending. I grew up with Fleisher/Szell in the mid 1960's as Epic stereo LP's. My bro bought the Essential Classics CD's for a memorial to our memories of listening to the Emperor with my Dad, who passed in 1999.I concur with Fleisher/Szell--no way to beat the cycle as a box. I also own the Ashkenazy/Cleveland (playing and conducting) from mid 80's London digital CD's. Funny, I was going to interact with Thornhill on this privately, because of some observations I made on Decca sound. The Ashkenazy doesn't have tension between conductor and soloist, obviously, but still is poetic and strong with exceptional playing. Mated with Choral Fantasy, slower than my other versions. Unfortunately, the string sound is quite closely miked and bright.
Also have some of the digital Peraiha/Haintink/Amsterdam digital CBS on LP/CD and Brendel/Haitink/digital Philips. I remember that the live Brendel/Solti is a great cycle. The digital LP's are in my father's collection. Very strong.
Arrau/Haintink is also great and more poetic and expansive. A great document of a great artist.
