Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Solti/Ashkenazy...

For some reason, it's unfashionable in some circles to like Solti, but I'll take his Beethoven any day. The Ashkenazy set is among the best, I think. There's definitely some tension between the pianist, who seems to want to be more poetic, and Solti, who seems to want and rock and roll, but there's nothing wrong with that. It just doesn't come together as seamlessly for me as Fleisher/Szell, but it's still one of the top sets, I think.

I also love the Reiner/Horowitz "Emperor". Talk about bravado! In fact, that's the one I usually play for non-classical music lover friends--the sheer energy will win anyone over.

As far as "alternative" sets, I want to mention the Harnoncourt/Aimard. I've only just got this (and only because berkshirerecordoutlet.com had it for $17--sadly, they seem to already have run out!), but I'm pretty impressed so far, at least in terms of viewing this as an alternative to more standard interpretations. We'll see how it sounds once I've been listening to it for a few decades, as I have the Szell or the Solti!
