I would bet it is the effects of brick wall filtering in the ADC's used to transfer the 2-track analogue master.This can stuff up the impulse rich attacks or starting transients on each note, on which our hearing relies so much.
then there is the digital remasterers who think they can 'improve' a true stereo analogue recording.
has anyone tried reversing polarity, on the spkrs. Betcha it helps ;~)}.
Y'all really must get this stuff right, :-) we don't listen to sine waves, and compressions are NOT the inverse of rarefactions in air, even if they look as if they ought to be on an oscilloscope. Air is not linear.
Also, ribbon tweeters may be linear in both directions, as may electrostatics, but dynamic drivers just aren't at all especially on fast stuff, even when used as dipoles.
