RE: 40th anniversary of the Compact Disc

"Can you remember what was your first cd player and when you purchased it?"

Magnavox CDB-460....... (Did "chip upgrades" to the thing..... In retrospect, didn't know if they did any good.)

"And, what was the first cd that you purchased?"

Peter Gabriel - "So" ...... (Still have the CD.)

There was a time, until the early 1990s, which I thought the CD was a hopelessly inadequate medium for satisfying high-end sound reproduction....... That all changed when I listened to a Wadia 7/9 combination in a now-defunct high-end audio store in Cleveland..... It was still the best digital source I have ever experienced...... (Although a proprietary digital playback system in the AGD room at the 2019 THE Show was probably comparable.)

What's wacky is that I ultimately settled in on a relatively "cheap" and often maligned CD playback system..... Yet I try modern DACs and playback media, and I personally cannot match it...... A Philips CDC935 CD changer with the output stage replaced by a tube audio section...... The only thing that I believe I had better was the ten grand Prism Sound DA-2 DAC......... But I'm playing CDs more than any other medium...... Sure the vinyl sounds better, but I still enjoy CD playback a lot, to where I don't long to do the vinyl (with rare exception)...... And don't have to worry about preparing or treating the media all the time.
