Use your ears, but always listen to the real thing as often as possible. In order to get an idea on what to listen for whenever you evaluate equipment. For without the live reference, one's preconceived ideas on what sounds good might not be consistent with the real thing.
I'm also one who thinks if it both sounds good and measures good, it probably is truly good.
