You need BOTH ears and technical data. Sometimes the data fools you. But sometimes your ears fool you. If all you care about is to like the sound your ears are sufficient. But if some sense of fidelity is the goal you need all the data you can get both objective and subjective(your ears and other ears) and then you have a chance of getting it right. Lots of people think a Toyota Camry is a great car. It's great transportation but not a car if you enjoy driving.
