Have you ever listened to a Phil Spector 'Wall of Sound' recording? Horrible sounding. 'Wall of Mud' would be a better description. These recordings are from the 'golden age' when tubes and analogue ruled, yet they still sound bad. And Phil is claimed to be one of the best. Wow! And yuck!
There are tons of great sounding recordings done these days, probably more than a generation ago. But one would never know if their musical diet is primarily pop/rock type music. Nothing wrong with this music, I love it. But I have never expected particular good sound from this stuff.
