I just looked up some name-brand speaker cables on Audio Advisor (much more my price level than Music Direct, which seems to be more audiophile pornography than it is a hi-fi shop). Ouch... with my needs, this is a awful lot of money to spend on a hunch.I need two 15' lengths. Yeah, that's nice and long; the amplifier is across the room from the speakers and reality unfortunately prevents me from any other placement. Maybe this is an instance where thicker gauge might come into play? My cable is good old, $0.47/ft 16 AWG zip cord. I realize that's hardly prestigious cable and that I very well might be able to get better performance with a better pair of cables. As I said, I'm for the most part a cable skeptic, but I acknowledge that zip cord is complete shite.
This really is the X factor and will be the first thing I look at. Do you know any cheapo 12 AWG shielded cables, preferably terminated in bare wire? Bare wire is preferable, at least on one end, because my speakers are old (mid-'70s) and have the guillotine clip. I could just get a pair with spades, though, and cut the spades off of one end.
