Abe,Before upgrading my older PC to XP, rebooting or shutting down Win98 was a hit or miss affair. Probably worked half the time. The other times, I would have to power it down followed by the snotty "if you had shut it down properly idiot, you wouldn't be getting this screen" message. With XP, the machines always shut down. They always reboot when you ask for them to.
The only downside I've experienced is that because XP has an NT multi-threaded core, it requires more memory. Minimum 256 mb with more always better. My older Dell does fine with 384 mb.
As for the service patch, I installed it to both machines, a 1998 Dell PII-400 and my 2002 Dell P4-2200 with no problems at all.
