By the time I started reading Listener two years ago, I already had my audio system established and I wasn't ready to do any more buying or selling for a while. So, I read the reviews mostly for entertainment and education, not because I was a consumer looking for the next piece of gear.
But I would like to thank Listener and Dudley for having a huge influence not on my audio life but in my musical life.
Dudley's interview with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band leader Rob McEwen (sp?) early in 2001, focusing on the 3-LP "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" was what turned me on to bluegrass. A month or two before that article, I had never even heard bluegrass. I assumed that bluegrass and "country" were the same thing. But about a month before that article, I had picked up a "Seldom Scene" record at a flea market for $1 and enjoyed it.
Then I read about "Circle" in Listener and thought, "Hmm, I should check this out." Off to my local used record store, and I find a nice copy of the 3-LP set.
I come home and put it on my turntable and listen to all six sides, transfixed. I loved this music. Since then I've become a big bluegrass fan. I even bought a mandolin earlier this year and I'm taking lessons and learning to play (although I'm not very good yet).
So, I would like to thank Listener and Dudley. Although Listener has made no impact on my audio life, it has turned me into a bluegrass fan which in turn inspired me to learn to play a musical instrument, which has brought me so much fun.
Thanks for the excellent publication, and best wishes in your next endeavors.
Darryl
