Let me give some background, I heard the Linn system in an all Ayre R series setup(AMAZING BTW), I have the K and V series pre amp and amp. I heard the linn against the Arcam, Ayre and Puccini set up. The Linn really was pretty amazing. The software portion is actually operating system independent. You need to have software that will read and write Flac or Wav files, they use Twonky Media but I suspect any of the other media players such as OpenSource Banshee should work as well. The software is accessed via a hand held PDA such as Nokia wirelessly. As long as you can access the program which is supposed to be UPnP then you can browse and load your files just like any other remote file data.
Unlike the Wavelength USB dacs the linn is not limited to 96k
I think what you read about the Linn system in sterophile was that their interface was not very good and they wanted to leave it up to other people preferences for media access to be available. Anyway the whole setup turns out to be pretty expensive, I would say about 10K, although the Puccini is 20K.
I do see this, however as the future for digital media playback and given your previous history of taking audio to new heights I cannot wait to hear your offerings.
If you need a beta tester for the ethernet DAC I would be happy to volunteer my time!just send me a PM;>
