Gang,
First though somewhat annoying Vista is much better. You could take basically the same instructions for laptops though most PC ones take along time to crack open to change drives...
So let's look at a full scale desktop....
Ditch the internal drive as we want the hard drive to be SSD. That way there are no moving parts on playback.
Insert the SSD drive for the standard drive. You may need some sorta widget as the SSD drives are typically 2.5" and the standard drive is a 3.5".
Next you will need an optimal playback card with SPDIF if you want it. For that many of the companies we are talking about that do off the shelf designs use either the Lynx L22 card or the RME products:

http://www.rme-audio.de/en_products.php
Both have good specs for SPDIF and sound pretty good in the analog domain but are at the will of the power supply of the computer and part of the reason why I prefer to take the DAC section out of the computer.
It would be cool if someone made a PCI card with an external power supply so the card could be really good. But then again with all the bus traffic and other BS happening inside the enclosure, I would expect really good results there.
Ok install the OS onto the SSD drive...
My favorite PC program for all in one is the J River Media Center. You can rip the songs in error free format (what they call secure mode) and it has good playback and tons of options for remotes and stuff.
There is non specific setup info on my USBDACS.com website for both PC and MAC including remotes and stuff.
Thanks
