This has been my experience too. I always record my own music at 44.1K because redbook CD is the final destiny. However, I use 24 bits instead of 16 bits. 24/44.1 seems to give me the best results for mixing 8 to 10 tracks down to two. I don't bother with dither noise anymore to get it down to 16 bits either. I just truncate and it seems to sound the best for me. Go figure.
