HowdyAt least in a theoretical sense you definitions are wrong.
You can up (or down) sample synchronously by any integer ratio and to go from 44.1k to say 96k you need to upsample by 320/147, i.e. upsample by 320 and then down sample by 147. The important point is that the output clock is synchronous with the input, there is no drift over time.
Asynchronous conversion involves two separate clocks, the input clock and the output clock and you can consider it as upsampling followed by (perhaps interpolated) resampling at the output rate.
Back in the real world you will find that most devices that offer CD to 96 or 192 conversations are using asynchronous sample rate conversion (since there are plenty of off the shelf chips that do it these days) but I just wanted to point out that it's not required as you state.
I agree that all things being equal I'm a fan of synchronous upsampling, but I've heard some good sounding DACs that use ASRC. You have to judge the whole system not just fixate on one small piece.
