Now THAT would be dangerous. You'd end up pickin' bits of magnet and pole piece out of your brain for a while. :)

The magnetic field inside one of those things is truly awesome. I once saw a demonstration where a 22 oz. framing hammer was held vertically on a string a couple of feet outside the torus. When the field was energized, the hammer was damn near perfectly horizontal.

And when I had an MRI done some years back, they asked if I'd ever had any bits of steel in my eyes. I had, due to some sparks that'd blown under my safety glasses when I worked at a shop that made carbide tipped saw blades. They immediately shot me down to X-ray to make sure there were no traces left, even of such tiny pieces.
