Hello Dean,i remember you and it was my pleasure to meet you at RMAF, you are the guy who is looking for the right speakers for the next 30 years!
Apollo uses a 16 Ohms AlNiCo- wideband- driver made to my specs. Regarding my age it can happen that you don`t get exchange- drivers from me anymore in 29 years but they will be available (although it is hard to destroy them by listening to music, under normal conditions the speakers will live longer than i, even when i will become 90 years old).
Before i assemble the speakers i treat the widebands in a special process with oil and laquer which makes the cone able to flex in the upper frequency- range. The common behaviour of cone- drivers to produce smaller dispersion in analogy to the rising frequency doesn`t count for Apollo because only small parts of the cone move controlled at high frequencies. By this the dispersion stays wide- angled and the frequency- response is very flat at listening- position between 20 and 40 degrees out of axxis - regarding that the wideband is crossoverless. You can look at my website, there is a graph from a Prometheus- review in a German magazine, Prometheus has a similar behaviour. The dispersion in the crossover- area between the wideband and the tweeter is not 100% equal but it is optimised to be similar, this relation has a big influence in sound. Regarding the special design using a single wideband- driver for the whole frequency- range in which musical information is transported (up to 8 Khz) the small differences in dispersion are much less disturbing than in common multiway- designs, even single fullrange- drivers and planar speakers will not produce a 100% equal dispersion over the whole frequency- range. No speaker is close to technical perfection, even not Apollo - but i try to minimize each disturbing component i know down to a level which is not audible anymore.
The finish of the wooden fronts can made to your wishes, matching massive- wooden horns included, please allow three month to get your own unique Apollos made. You also can get stone- fronts and aluminium- fronts, the body also can be laquered in other colours, many finishes are possible without extra- costs, some are expensive.
Have you listened Apollo again? Tony mailed me that the sound and imaging is much better in his room than at RMAF.Regards
Robert Bastani
