I heard this at AXPONA 2023 but the room was so small, the bass overwhelmed it. So I can't really comment on the sound but, I was very impressed with their Model 1 at the previous AXPONA, it was in a giant hall but it still sounded good to me. Thank you Robert Raus for playing some Star Wars for me from a SACD I believe.

The VPE Model 2 DSP Dipole Woofer was the result of three years of design and experimentation. The Model 2 provides a good fit, electrically, acoustically, and aesthetically for your larger dipole speakers, (e.g. Magnepan Models 3.7 and 20.7, Quad 2812 and 2912). It is the fastest, best-performing dynamic woofer you have ever heard because it shares the advantages of a dipole - a super-cardioid polar response and NO cabinet resonance or energy storage. The Model 2 is a cubically shaped cabinet with a floor-coupled front slot and an open back. The DSP amplifier is mounted on the back "dog-bone" panel for aesthetics and ease of connection. The Model 2 can be placed in your listening room in between your panel loudspeakers and far enough away from the back wall to provide a dipole response indistinguishable from your large dipole loudspeakers, but much lower in frequency and more powerful than panel loudspeakers are capable of operating.

"The Model 2 owes its existence to the writings of two audio legends - Siegfried Linkwitz and Nelson Pass, and the introduction of affordable drivers and DSP-controlled Class D amplification from Dayton Audio. The Model 2 is constructed of Baltic

From the looks of it, it's a very sound design.

How does this differ from a typical open-baffle sub, for example a Rhythmik open baffle sub?

I see that it has a cabinet, almost seems like some kind of variation on a bandpass / reflex kind of thing, so not an open baffle really.

It's slot loaded, an arrangement developed by Nelson Pass, and the radiation pattern is somewhat cardioid, rather than a pure dipole. What the slot does is increase the velocity of the air as it travels through the slot. This in turn means that more energy is imparted to the air. I suppose you could also look at it as increasing the acoustical impedance seen by the driver, which reduces the impedance mismatch between the driver and the air, increasing energy transfer.

I gather the back is open so in that regard, it's like a folded baffle except closed at the top. I'd say that not having a full enclosure would significantly reduce stored energy in the cabinet and the enclosure. The disadvantage of a folded baffle arrangement is that it limits high frequency extension, since at some point you get a hooty cavity resonance. They're going up to 80 Hz, which is a good XO point, with a second order filter. Hopefully the output is sufficiently attenuated (at least 20 dB) at the point at which the resonance begins -- that depends on the dimensions of the folded baffle.

Here is a SLOB bass speaker with fairly inexpensive bass drivers.

Looks like a fun project.

Kind of a reflex design crossed with horn loading....?

I think that's an interesting way of visualizing it. The main difference with a reflex design is that the sound emerges out of phase, rather than in phase! So it has a cardioid radiation pattern. Actually, it's a dipole at the bottom of its range and it shifts to cardioid further up. The slot apparently lowers Fs, too.
